FOSS has advantages concerning security and reliability. But not everywhere in the world, security is considered as very important fact. Why should I use FOSS for security reasons?

Please see the training material  Block11-Barriers to Open Source adoption.pdf (316Ko). Security considerations are important. Many FOSS products are at least as secure as their commercial counterparts.

As it is with the costs, at the moment, awareness for security is not given everywhere in the world. But for serious businesses (companies with a long-term perspective and vision), security and reliability are crucial. For example, the Vietnam stock exchange uses FOSS because of its security and reliability: Proprietary software had a lot of down times. But FOSS ensures that information is delivered reliably.
Security and reliability are reasons, too, for the Vietnamese government to support to use of FOSS. Furthermore, the decision to use FOSS was made.

Security is a very wide field and ranges from viruses and worms to privacy laws and business continuity procedures, which can not be covered here. Please search the Internet for more information on these subjects.
