Less problems with downward compatibility with older versions
Open standards foster provider independence
Open standards are easy to audit
Open standards facilitate storage and long-time archiving
Open standards may lead to a standardization of the IT industry
Open standards foster knowledge and information sharing

Higher Security

More people checking the code results in earlier and faster finding and removing of “bugs”
Many open source operating systems allow a very fine grained user rights control
Server software often very reliable and well tested

Cost

No license costs
Less necessity for anti-virus software
Administrators and training available on the market
Competition encourages reduces market prices
